How can Chiropractic Care be Beneficial During Pregnancy?

Blog

Pregnancy is different for every woman. You are likely to feel excited about your impending motherhood, but at the same time you might experience some physical discomfort or even pain, and you might be apprehensive about labour. All of this is perfectly valid, but navigating your own health during this period can be very difficult, especially when you have to be very careful about the medications you take and the food and drink that you consume during this time.

One area of physical therapy that you can turn to with confidence during this period is chiropractic care. Not only is it safe, but it can be very beneficial for the expectant mother.

Understanding changes during pregnancy

When you have a growing life inside of you, there will be structural changes thanks to the added weight, and hormonal changes that contribute to pelvic and spinal misalignment. In chiropractic care, these are called subluxations. Regular visits to a chiropractor can correct these subluxations, and thus correct the following problems that are common during pregnancy.

  • Nerve tension. If you are experiencing nerve pain, a chiropractor could help. In the places where there is spinal misalignment during pregnancy, it is common for inflammation to occur. This will lead to changes in nerves exiting the spinal column, which are connected to nerves all over the body, including vital organs, blood vessels, and muscles. Realigning the spine through chiropractic care will alleviate this pain.
  • Headaches. The source of headaches is often located far south of the actual pain, in the spine. When your child growing inside of you places excessive pressure on your spinal cord, that pressure could very well manifest itself as an intense headache. Because it's inadvisable to take painkiller medications during pregnancy, finding a natural treatment for headaches will make your pregnancy much more comfortable. The great thing about chiropractic care is that it actually treats the underlying cause of the headache by realigning the spine.
  • Breech babies. One particular chiropractic technique called the Webster Technique has also been demonstrated to turn babies in the breech position. Babies stay in breech when the round ligaments in the womb are tight, and this means that a baby has trouble turning around. The Webster Technique, however, focuses on relieving those ligaments of their tightness by realigning the sacrum, which is a vertebra at the base of the spine.

Recurrent back pain

I've had so many back pain issues over the years. I think it's cost me thousands of dollars when you work out how much I've spent on useless devices that are supposed to help, medical appointments and all the time I've missed from either attending appointments or being in too much pain to go into work. It's also made horrible inroads into my social life by affecting how much I can participate in social events with friends and family. I want to make sure that I actually cure my back pain this time, rather than just treating the symptoms so I can really start living my life.
